Today is more than a milestone – An almost stolen moment.
It is relief. It is disbelief — the kind many dared to hope for, even when optimism felt fragile. A quiet, overwhelming wow: after 843 days, we are finally here.
At last, the final life stolen can be laid to rest with the dignity he was denied. His family can begin the long, sacred work of mourning. And a whole country, having carried this ache for so long, can finally — slowly — begin to heal.
The body of the last Israeli hostage taken into Gaza on October 7, 2023 has been recovered. Ran Gvili was taken after being killed, his body dragged from Israel into Gaza — a war crime and an act of terror. He was one of more than 250 innocent civilians taken, abducted from their homes and communities.
That it took 843 days to reach this moment speaks to the scale of the horror and the unbearable waiting endured by families.
To understand what this moment truly means, it matters whose voices we listen to.
One such voice is Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib — a Palestinian who speaks first and foremost for his people. He is genuinely pro-Palestinian, unequivocally anti-Hamas, and also pro-Israel, while openly criticizing Israeli governments and policies when warranted. He embodies a truth many try to erase: supporting a people does not require blind agreement with those in power. His focus is not ideology or moral posturing, but what will actually allow Palestinians and Israelis to live with dignity, safety, and a future.
In his words:
“The recovery of the body of the last Israeli hostage… marks a significant endpoint to a dark and shameful chapter in the Israel and Palestine conflict.”
“On that day, civilians who were not engaged in combat or hostilities were mauled, mutilated, slaughtered, and dragged back into Gaza to be pieces of a despicable chessboard.”
“Millions around the world found it acceptable, or even commendable, to celebrate the taking of hostages as a valiant act of ‘resistance,’ choosing instead to refer to them as prisoners in a desperate and vile bid to dehumanize their plight.”
Voices like his matter because they reject false binaries. They insist that one can stand with Israel and still criticize its government, and be truly pro-Palestinian while rejecting terror and the destruction of one’s own society.
