BCTC Event /One Participant’s Reflection

Twenty five people gathered at a suburban home in East Cobb on a Sunday afternoon in May. A handful of the participants were neighbors, others co-workers, and a few were family members. However, most of the people in the room were perfect strangers to one another upon their arrival. They simply engaged in an opportunity to participate in a “kind and curious” civil discourse conversation.

A group of people engaged in conversation in a cozy, modern living space. Several individuals are seated on stylish chairs, while others stand nearby. The room features light wooden floors and contemporary decor, including a painting on the wall.

One participant, Kate Kukler-Robins, shared a personal reflection on why BCTC gatherings are so important in today’s divided world: they create a much-needed space to explore misunderstandings before they harden into distance, fear, or hatred.

“Conversation today is more important than ever. We live in a time where misunderstandings spread quickly, where people are often encouraged to speak at one another instead of with one another. As the daughter a Holocaust survivor, I am aware of the importance of education, but have also witnessed the realities of its absence. What I learned at my first BCTC event, while admittedly a bit guarded as conversation began, with a wide variety of people in the room, was that meaningful dialogue has the ability to break down fear, challenge assumptions, and replace ignorance with understanding. A single honest conversation can shift perspectives in ways that arguments and headlines never could. When people feel heard rather than judged, walls begin to come down, and respect can begin to grow.

The true takeaway from attending a gathering like this is the realization that unity does not require sameness. It teaches us that differences are not barriers, but opportunities to learn, grow, and deepen our understanding of the world. These experiences leave a lasting impact because they remind us that human connection is still one of the most powerful forces we have. In coming together, we rediscover empathy, compassion, and the responsibility we all share in creating a more thoughtful and peaceful world. This I believe, is the work that BCTC is achieving one step at a time.”

Because words matter.
Because belonging matters.
Because understanding matters.

And because standing up against Jewish hatred begins, often, with being open.

Because sometimes the most powerful step forward is simply starting a conversation.
