Our recent Building Community Thru Conversation (BCTC) event on January 30th sparked a thought-provoking discussion about the complexities of the Middle East conflict. We began with a question that many have asked: “What is the Middle East conflict, simplified?” While this is no easy task, we broke it down into more digestible pieces, starting with essential resources to guide deeper understanding.
📚 Recommended Reading: We suggested Noa Tishby’s Israel: The Most Misunderstood Country on Earth and her second book, Uncomfortable Conversations with a Jew (co-authored with Emmanuel Acho) to help frame the conversation. For additional resources, we directed attendees to our website, bctctalks.org, where more materials can be explored to deepen one’s understanding of the issues at hand.
⏳ Where Do We Start?: One of the first questions we discussed was where should we begin our exploration of the conflict? Is it with ancient religious texts, modern governance, or something else? To offer a quick historical overview, we referenced the Imperial History of the Middle East: 5,000 Years in 90 Seconds—a short yet comprehensive video that sums up the region’s complex political changes. But beyond historical context, we raised an essential point: Does the starting point even matter? Shouldn’t we focus on the present and how we can move toward peaceful coexistence?
💔 October 7th: A Day of Shock: We reflected on October 7th, a day that shocked the world, as Hamas launched a brutal attack on peaceful Israeli communities. These communities, including kibbutzim and moshav villages, had been working for years to improve relations with Palestinians, even providing medical care to people in Gaza. The irony and cruelty of this attack, directed at those who had dedicated themselves to peace, was a stark reminder of the deeply entrenched hatred that fuels violence in the region.
🎓 Hate Education: We also discussed how it was discovered that children in Gaza are raised on a steady diet of hate. Textbooks and educational materials indoctrinate young people to view Jews as enemies to be eradicated. The Hamas Charter and school curricula promote martyrdom and the destruction of Israel, creating an environment where violence is normalized from an early age.
🇮🇷 Iran’s Role in Regional Instability: Another key point was the influence of Iran, which supports both Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Hezbollah, for example, has built an extensive tunnel network in Lebanon, similar to those in Gaza, intended to facilitate coordinated attacks on Israel. When the war was expanded to Lebanon after repeated attacks from Hezbollah, Israel’s Defense Forces (IDF) uncovered and, thankfully, were able to disrupt Hezbollah’s similar plans before they could be executed.
💥 The Aftermath of Israel’s Withdrawal: We’d like to note an important point not discussed in the event itself but still critical to understanding the ongoing conflict—even after Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, the violence didn’t end. Rocket fire from Gaza continued to target Israeli communities, and despite the growing threats, Israel refrained from immediate military response. It wasn’t until later that we learned Hamas was preparing for a much larger, devastating attack.
🕊️ Jewish Identity and Community: In the latter part of the event, we explored what it means to be Jewish today. We discussed the importance and potential danger of cultural symbols, such as wearing a Star of David and hanging a mezuzah on the doorpost of your home. We also reflected on the complexities of Jewish identity as Judaism is not just religion for many, but also a matter of historical background and/or ethnicity for others. Jews also share a common identity with varying levels of religious observance. A key takeaway was that, as with any community, there are diverse beliefs and experiences within Judaism. Embracing these differences is essential to building a more inclusive, understanding community.
💬 A Conversation of Reflection and Learning: This event wasn’t just about discussing complex issues—it was a moment of reflection and growth. We acknowledged that while the issues we tackled are vast and multifaceted, the key to resolving them lies in education, curiosity, and understanding. It is through these channels that we can continue to foster peace, tolerance, and coexistence.
